“Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
I can’t believe it is the Summer Solstice already! It is not usual for the the Solstice to coincide with the last day of school. It makes it very difficult to plan a special Solstice activity with the girls. Usually we toast marshmallows and hang out with the mosquitoes while waiting to see if there are any fireflies to catch, but this year (if it doesn’t rain), we have a graduation party to attend. The party promises to be fun, but if it rains, what will we do? The solstice is no fun when it is dark and dreary and wet. Drats.
Anyway, I just saw a contest (at Skeins Her Way) via Sarah’s blog about posting our summer knitting goals. I have one hour left to enter before the deadline on this Solstice Eve so I hope I can think of some. I have been doing a lot of thinking about Summer Goals in general and I have quite a few, but I will limit this post to just knitting goals.
1.) Since I did sign up for Summer of Socks, I will knit one pair of socks from beginning to end. (I know, one! I’m not really pushing myself with these goals, am I???)
2.) I will knit 20 more squares on my Sock Blankie.
3.) I will knit one market bag.
4.) I will knit some things with my hand spun yarn.
5.) I will get at least one of my children to knit something and enjoy it.
So what do you think? Are they obtainable? We do have a lot of driving to do this summer so maybe I can knit somehand spun hats while on the highway? Maybe I can knit socks while sitting at the pool watching the girls? Maybe I can knit my market bag while watching Battlestar Galactica? Maybe I can ban TV, PS2, Webkins, YouTube, and IM so the girls will be bored enough to want to knit? Sarah has 10 very ambitious goals which sort of make my goals look like slacker goals, don’t they? I guess I will have to make up for that with my dyeing and reading goals which I guess will be in a future post.
Well, I better get cruising and get myself entered into this contest!
So, Happy Solstice everyone – hope you don’t miss it and hope you have a great day!

Your goals are great for you, and not slacker-ish at all. It leaves you with time to knit other things should you choose and yet gives you a nice guide for things you would like to accomplish.
Happy soon-to-be Summer. I think those sound like perfect goals. Challenging, without being too overwhelming. Which is just what summer should be.
I’ve been thinking of you all day you solstice Chickie you!
Yeah, but let me be the first to tell you that if Procrastinator Sarah meets all her goals, surely it will be a sign of the apocalypse.
Happy Solstice!
I think those goals are very impressive and not slackerish at all. I especially like the banning all those things one. Can I ban my children from my room? I can’t even type, comb my hair, change clothes, shower, etc. etc. etc. without constant (most often unimportant) interruptions. I mean, it’s great to feel loved… but egad! {hmmm… i digressed off your topic i think… sorry about that!}
Goals are good! I think yours should be doable, if you like the sound of them.
I had a lovely day, thanks. If all of summer is like the Solstice was for me, I will be a very happy camper.
