Hummm… uhm… yes… if you are thinking this title is inspired by this song, then you are correct! I’ve been singing this for the last couple of days in anticipation of getting my new comma! Just in case you are wondering, a good alternate title for this post would be “Never, ever, ever, in a million years, even think of eating Price Choper Sesame Seed Bagels near your laptop. Ever.”
Look at this photo! Do you see — no comma where a comma should be. Just a little stump of a comma key!

Bad things happen to those who eat sesame seeds near their keyboards. They (the seeds that is, not the people) fly everywhere and get under the keys thereby making them not too efficient at their jobs of typing letters. A very funny thing about laptop keys — they are not removeable. Well, they are removable, but they are not replaceable. If you lose a key – you really need to replace your whole keyboard because they don’t just pop back on like you would think they would. So if you are contemplating eating sesame seed bagels by your keyboard, please think twice because it is not a pretty picture!
So, I’ve been living with a ghost of a comma for a couple of months now. The comma key is also the same key as the less-than sign which is used quite a bit in HTML and since I am taking an HTML class — this has added an extra difficulty in writing the code for my class. So besides my cute little camera — IHA also bought me a new comma/less-than sign for Christmas! It came with a whole new keyboard and I have to tell you this keyboard is very springy! The keys have a bit of life to them. My fingers have been hurting a lot lately — maybe it is not the knitting – maybe I just had a tired keyboard!
My comma engineer:

My new comma!!!

Now everyone to whom I regularly send e-mails can give a little *whoo hoo* as there will be no more e-mails from me lamenting the loss of my comma… (But just remember, I may have my comma back — but that still doesn’t mean I will always know when to use it. That is going to be one of my New Year’s goals – review of comma usage rules (and, don’t worry, other grammar too…).)
As a side note, I can not seem to find AvaSpinny. She is missing, as is AvaCroppy. I can go to the Yahoo website to see AvaSpinny and I still have the code for AvaSpinny in my sidebar but she has left the blog. I think she and AvaCroppy have pulled a Thelma and Louise! Perhaps by the time you read this they will be back!

Just for the record….The new keyboard was given to you by Santa, not IHA.
I was willing to let you suffer a little while longer since you ate a bagel (OMG!) at your computer. Tisk, tisk….
IHA
Well, I know there are three entries to catch up on – I also feel like I have been living in a time warp. When my parents visit I get no computer time at all. Which is good and all – but I am behind.
So, love the photos of the girls. You got great gifts as usual! AND might I add that I too was part of the conspiracy in my small way.
Glad to hear of your comma return, Santa is good to you.
As to our Thelma and Louisin Avas… both mine and yours are in their proper cyberworlds as I view them. You better check – maybe they are allergic to your new keyboard! Yipe.
See you Friday!! Can’t wait!!!
Hurray for your comma–a piece of punctuation I’d sorely miss. You made me chuckle, though–we used to have a computer routine at the office that required three commas in a row, and it was known as the Boy George routine, as in “Just Boy George it.” Ah, those were the days!
Guess what? My Avas are back! IHA had the Zone Alarm set to block all banner ads and apparently Yahoo Avatars are banner ads… who knew!!!
[...] Christmas went went well at the IHA household. Santa brought Spincerely a new laptop keyboard. No more comma troubles for her. [...]
ohmy! ‘puter innards! comma usage is depressingly underrated, isn’t it?
